What is SEO? Search engine optimisation explained

A clear explanation of what SEO is, why it matters and how AI is changing it.

SEO stands for search engine optimisation (or optimization, in American English). It covers everything you do to make your website more visible in the organic, unpaid results of search engines such as Google and Bing. The better your pages match what people are looking for, and the more trustworthy your website appears, the better your chances of ranking at the top.

SEO in one sentence

SEO means making sure the right people find your website at the moment they search for your product, service or expertise, without paying for every click.

Why SEO matters

Almost every purchase or decision now starts with a search. Whether someone is looking for a plumber, comparing running shoes or choosing accounting software, the first step is often a search engine. If you are not visible at that moment, you hand those customers to a competitor. Visitors from organic search are also valuable because they are actively looking for something: the interest is already there.

SEO is also an investment that keeps paying off. An ad stops the moment your budget runs out, but a page that ranks well can attract visitors for months or even years.

SEO vs PPC

Paid search (PPC, for example Google Ads) puts you at the top instantly, but you pay for every click and disappear the moment you stop paying. SEO takes longer to build momentum but generates ongoing traffic without a cost per click. The smartest strategy often combines both.

What does SEO involve?

SEO is usually divided into three pillars: technical SEO, content and authority. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can read your site, content makes sure your pages answer the searcher's question, and authority means other websites trust you enough to link to you.

From SEO to GEO/SEO

Search is changing. Alongside the classic list of results, people increasingly get a summarised answer from an AI model, within Google itself (AI Overviews) or in tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Optimising for those answers is called GEO, Generative Engine Optimization. The good news: what works for SEO is also the basis for GEO. Clear, factual and trustworthy information is rewarded by search engines and language models alike.

Is SEO difficult?

SEO isn't necessarily difficult, but it is broad. It requires knowledge of technology, content and marketing at the same time, and the rules change regularly. Many businesses can learn the basics themselves, for example through an SEO training course, and bring in a specialist for strategy or technical work.

How long does SEO take?

SEO is an ongoing process rather than a one-off task. You often see first results within weeks to months; sustainable growth builds up over a longer period.

You can certainly learn the basics yourself. For complex technical issues, a sharp strategy or competitive markets, it pays to bring in an SEO consultant.
